About Friday

Friday has spent a lifetime surrounded by utilitarian metalwork objects and the smell of the forge. These influences are clear in her work, which uses objects from everyday life and casts them in silver.

  • So it wasn’t just my dad’s creativity I inherited… massive shout out to my mum too! If I wanted something new, a toy for example, she would say ‘let’s make one’ this delightful dolly is the result of one of those moments. It has been sitting on a very high, dusty and grimy shelf for about 35 years. I think it was my first go at using a sewing machine and not an electric one either it was a beautiful old singer, it’s actually still going! I remember making it so well.. the legs are different sizes and she has a broken neck but still quite the charmer!! 😆@irenelawrence508 #ragdoll
  • When I started making jewellery lots of people said to me ‘you need to share your story’ ‘people love to know the person, the maker and at first I found the idea of this quite intrusive and thought, why can’t people just buy what I make, why do they need to know about me? Then over the many years I have been using social media to advertise what I do and now studying at university I have come to understand the importance of ‘knowing the artist…’ it can give the buyer a much more meaningful piece of jewellery or art, not just because they love the piece of jewellery but because they understand the meaning and reason behind a piece from the makers point of view. It’s not just jewellery that I make there is so much more to it.. these photos are of the farriers trug that my Dad, Sim used when he was working as a farrier. It is a long time ago now but seeing and handling all the tools again made me realise it all comes from this set of tools and these very horseshoe very nails that I would sit and play with as a child while my dad was working. My Farrier collection will be forever so much more special to me now and I will always continue it. #deaddadsclub #farrier #horseshoenail #silverhorseshoenailjewellery ewellery #slightleworriedihavebecomesentimental!

A great day teaching in Bristol at the workshop of @alicegoldsack it was an one day all day class, the students were ambitious and worked really hard to produce this lot of creative jewellery! They were a lovely bunch! If you are interested in learning head over to alicegoldsack.com to book in a day class or 12 week course.
